52+: Support your neighbors

This morning I nudged myself to mix things up and go work in a local independent bakery for an hour. Change of scenery, no distractions (I know that sounds odd, but my to-do list is at the office), and a few dollars of support for our neighbors’ small business.

As I headed out for the walk home, the change in my pocket inspired me to stop at our favorite flower shop. As I was paying for the posies that now grace my desk, I asked the owner if she was busy with the holiday coming up. “Not at all,” she said. “It’s not like it was 30 years ago, when we were crazy-busy. This generation is different.”

I get that, in part. I’m among the members of “this” generation that doesn’t go ALL OUT for a huge Thanksgiving extravaganza. Who has the time and energy to do this any more?

But I hurt to see businesses like this one struggle, especially when I can do my part to help. So I bought something for myself. And I’m thinking about going back tomorrow to pick up something for a friend. And I’m spreading the word.

As you count your blessings this season, think about how you might demonstrate your gratitude for all the small businesses that are a part of your neighborhood. Think about your neighbors who depend on these businesses for their livelihood. And instead of (or in addition to) hitting the Big Stores for Black Friday sales, spend some of your dollars locally.

I love this & it is so sad how consumerism has changed. My kids can’t even fill an Amazon wish list because there’s just nothing they need/want. I just sent fruit to some dear family. $50 in shipping, but wanted something special for them. We need more special & less stuff!
