Nudged: Challenge a negative thought…and flip it!

This Nudge was inspired by transformational coach Kelly Mishell, who has written a couple of guest posts for us (read them here and here). It’s a technique she taught me a few years ago when I was up against a huge deadline and feeling all my fears. Here’s how it works:

  1. Be aware of my “stinkin’ thinkin’.” Catch myself and take note of what I’m saying.
  2. Come up with an affirmation that is the exact opposite and use it as a daily mantra so that it replaces the original negative thought.

An example might be “I’m so fat” (which I’ll admit comes up far too often when I check myself out in a mirror). I might flip this to “Hello, Gorgeous! You are beautiful today, inside and out.”

What Happened: It was yet another week of looming deadlines and too many distractions. I caught myself thinking “I can’t do this, I can’t do this!” It was easy, then, to flip to “I can do this, I can do this.”

But as I thought about it some more, I felt my new mantra was too much in the future. I wanted something NOW. Something short and powerful and right now. I landed on “I got this.”

The post-it you see above has been on my computer all week and there it will stay. Any time I felt myself slipping into negativity, I looked at this and said it out loud. “I got this.”

The Ah-Hahs: It’s easy to slip into stinkin’ thinkin’. And guess what? It’s just as easy to flip it! What a fun and life-changing nudge!
