Nudged: Enjoy a fire in the fireplace

This is a tricky one for me because of the directive to "enjoy" this experience. Anyone who has lived in California during the past couple of decades can't help but be triggered by the smell of wood burning. But I love the idea of this: the sounds of the fire crackling, the beauty of the colors in the flames, the warmth it gives off. A good book, a cozy companion, and something lovely[...]

Nudged: Go to a “special” park

I had to look back at my notes to remember why I'd put "special" in quotes. Ah, yes, this is a reminder to treat myself to places I don't get to often, like the botanic gardens, Shakespeare garden, AIDS Memorial Grove, and Spreckels Lake. I live a short drive from Golden Gate Park, so there is an abundance of beauty available to me. I just don't get there very often because most days I'm[...]

Nudged: Celebrate the season

I did not fudge this Nudge! Even though we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving this week in the US, the timing of this was totally random. I added this Nudge to my bowl around Valentine's Day when I realized I had not done a thing (other than giving Thor a sweet card). All those cute heart decorations in the basement, all those recipes for heart-shaped cookies and cakes in my to-bake file.[...]

Nudged: Clear out voicemail messages

This is a tender one for me. Sure, it started out being part of decluttering efforts, to clear space. But when I looked at what has been living in my inbox long-term, I found "last" messages from my uncle, who passed away two years ago, and my aunt, who passed last December. Both were sudden, and I have yet to fully grieve their losses. It's time to let go. What will you be clearin[...]

52+: Support your neighbors

This morning I nudged myself to mix things up and go work in a local independent bakery for an hour. Change of scenery, no distractions (I know that sounds odd, but my to-do list is at the office), and a few dollars of support for our neighbors' small business. As I headed out for the walk home, the change in my pocket inspired me to stop at our favorite flower shop. As I was paying fo[...]

Nudged: No complaining

Oh, for pete's sake. "No complaining"--for a whole week?! This is going to be such a... See what I just did? ;-) There is so much negativity in our world right now, and I'd like to limit what I contribute. I know from experience my spirits are lifted when I'm around someone who has a positive outlook and attitude, and I'd like to be that good-hearted soul more often. So, from now--[...]
